Elon Musk’s presence in Central Texas is expanding further, with his brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, set to grow in the region. This development follows Musk’s earlier moves of relocating several of his companies, including Tesla, X, and The Boring Company, to the Lone Star State.
Neuralink has filed plans with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation for a new $14.7 billion facility in Del Valle, an east Austin suburb. Construction on the 112,000-square-foot building, set to be completed by May 2025, began in July. The facility will include a three-story office building, a machine shop, and manufacturing space, located on 37 acres of land.
Along with the new building, Neuralink is also hiring in the Austin area, posting multiple job openings for positions such as engineers, software specialists, and manufacturing technicians.
Musk’s growing footprint in Texas has contributed to the state’s economic and tech industry growth. Earlier this year, Texas Governor Greg Abbott referenced a Bloomberg report that claimed Musk is now the largest private employer in Austin, primarily due to the expansion of Tesla’s Gigafactory. However, the growth has also been accompanied by layoffs, including Tesla’s recent dismissal of 2,688 Austin employees.
Despite these fluctuations, Austin continues to solidify its reputation as a thriving tech hub. According to Thom Singer, CEO of the Austin Technology Council, Musk’s companies play a crucial role in the area’s expansion but are only part of the broader growth in the tech sector. Austin remains a prime destination for startups and established growth-oriented companies, with venture investment in the city continuing to rise.
